At a recent event in Mumbai, Sanjay Dutt displayed his signature irreverent charm to deftly handle a potentially tricky situation involving the Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. When the minister asked him to speak in Marathi, Sanjay jokingly deflected by making a self-deprecating comment and keeping the mood light. Scroll down to read the full story.
Sanjay Dutt Admits NOT Knowing How To Speak Marathi
During the event, Sarnaik mentioned, “Aajkal main sab logon ko Marathi sikha raha hoon,” referencing his department’s recent rule requiring autorickshaw drivers in Mumbai to understand Marathi phrases. He then joked, “So I thought after his entry, let us all get Sanjay Dutt to talk in Marathi. He speaks in Hindi, but all of us understand Marathi.”
“Marathi pride 🔥”… but only if you’re a taxi driver, auto-wallah or street vendor with no bodyguards and no film-industry connections.

Sanjay Dutt lives in Mumbai for 50+ years, openly admits he still can’t speak Marathi even after 6 years in https://t.co/9B23U2yVd0
Sanjay responded with humour, saying, “Pratap bhai. Main 6 saal jail me raha, Yervada mein. Tab bhi Marathi nahi seekh paaya. Main thoda seekha tha.” He then affectionately called Sarnaik his “old friend and brother,” adding, “Main Pratap bhai ka aabhaari hoon ki mujhe yahan bulaye. Hamara rishta bahut purana hai, 25 saal ho gaye hain.”
The reaction to Sanjay’s candidness was mixed. Many praised his easygoing attitude, with comments like “Only Sanjay Dutt or Salman Khan can defy a minister like this and still smile,” and “He ignored it with style.” Others pointed out the irony, noting, “If only autowallahs could say this and avoid heavy fines too,” highlighting the issue of language barriers for Mumbai’s autorickshaw drivers.
However, some expressed disappointment that Sanjay, who has lived in Maharashtra for over 50 years, admitted he still couldn’t speak Marathi fluently despite spending six years in Yerwada Jail. One tweet read, “Sanjay Dutt has been living in Mumbai for more than 50 years, and he himself says that even after spending 6 years in Yerwada Jail, he still couldn’t learn Marathi. And he openly admitted this in front of everyone, without any shame.”
Most recently, Sanjay appeared in the Arabic film 7 Dogs in a cameo alongside Salman Khan, but the film was both a critical and commercial failure.
