Over three decades after its release, the 1993 iconic crime actioner Khal Nayak is all set to be remade. Titled Khalnayak Returns, Sanjay Dutt announced the sequel recently and unveiled its first look on April 24. Now veteran director Subhash Ghai – who directed the first part of the film, has opened up about the film. In a recent interview, Ghai spoke about not directing the upcoming film, being associated with the project in other ways and more. Read on to know all he said.
Subhash Ghai Won’t Direct Sanjay Dutt’s Khalnayak Sequel
During a recent interaction with Bombay Times, Subhash Ghai revealed he will be associated with Khalnayak sequel but will not be directing it. He stated, “Sanjay Dutt was passionate about making this sequel for years. Even during his time in jail, he had written to me saying, ‘Uncle, I want to make this film.’ So, I sent him the concept and story.”
He continued, “If you ask me, no one can make this film the way I did. However, I don’t want to remake my own film; besides, I am 80 now. I told Sanju, ‘If you are so keen, why don’t you produce it yourself, and I can be your creative producer.’ I am sure he will find the right director for the film and announce it soon.” While the filmmaker won’t be behind the camera this time, he revealed he’s planning on a cameo appearance in the film.
During the same chat, Subhash Ghai also opened up about his bond with about his bond with Sanjay Dutt. Talking about the cameo, the filmmaker shared, “Sanju is like my son, so I will do it for him. I also did one for Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om.” He added, “I cherish the relationships I have built in the industry over the years. Some distributors stood by me even when some of my films didn’t work. Other than Rishi Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, who were established names when I worked with them in Karz (1980) and Vidhaata (1982), I never worked with stars. I looked for newer talent who fit the parts, and they went on to become huge stars.”

Released in 1993, Khal Nayak written, directed, and produced by Subhash Ghai under his production company Mukta Arts Ltd. The crime actioner starred Sanjay Dutt in the titular role, as well as Madhuri Dixit, Anupam Kher, Rakhee Gulzar and Jackie Shroff.
A couple of days ago, Sanjay Dutt announced a sequel to the film. Titled Khalnayak Returns, this film is being produced by The film is a collaboration between Jio Studios, Dutt’s Three Dimension Motion Pictures, and Aspect Entertainment.
