Over the years, we have seen several changes in the film industry. Unlike olden days, these days actresses are headlining films and the cinephiles are treated to more hard hitting and content driven women centric films. We have also seen several actresses coming forward and talking about the gender pay parity prevalent in the film industry.

However, Abhishek Bachchan once opened up about being paid less than his wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in majority of the films that they did together. The actor reasoned that the makers will pay an actor on the basis of how much they are bringing to the table.

Back in 2018, during an event, filmmaker Shoojit Sircar had asked Abhishek about his views if his daughter decides to become an actor. Answering if he would be comfortable with her daughter’s choice, Abhishek had said, “No. But before I answer that, I would like to give this some context and perspective. The two women who are close to me, my mother and my wife have worked in the industry on their own terms. They’ve never been forced to do anything they didn’t want to do.”

Further explaining his views, Abhishek added, “There’s a huge debate on gender parity in the film business and in other industries. I’ve worked in nine films with my wife and in eight of those, she’s got paid more than I have. The highest-paid actor in Piku was Deepika (Padukone). It’s a business and if you are a saleable actor, you get paid accordingly. You can’t be a new actress and demand to be paid the same as Shah Rukh Khan.”

Abhishek and Aishwarya have worked together in films like Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Kuchh Na Kaho, Guru, Umrao Jaan and Raavan and  Dhoom 2 to name a few.
