Batwara 1947 Box Office Day 1: Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta Starrer Trails Behind Emraan Hashmi-Led Awarapan 2; Fails To Earn Rs 10 Cr

The Independence Day weekend was expected to be a prime opportunity for Sunny Deol to shine with his patriotic film Batwara 1947. Historically, patriotic releases around such holidays have performed well, as seen with Gadar 2 and Border 2. The makers of Batwara 1947, a Partition-era drama, were likely encouraged by this trend. Batwara 1947 Box Office Day 1

Batwara 1947 failed to even cross Rs 10 crore on its opening day, with Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 dominating the scene. The film was always trailing in this box-office clash. In fact, Batwara 1947 only managed Rs 1.76 crore in advance bookings for day 1, compared to Awarapan 2’s impressive Rs 8+ crore. On release day, the trend persisted.

Despite receiving favourable reviews and praise for Sunny Deol and Shabana Azmi’s performances, Batwara 1947 did not gain enough momentum at the box office. According to Sacnilk, it opened at Rs 5.75 crore net in India, significantly lower than the Rs 21 crore earned by Awarapan 2 on the same day. This marks the lowest-opening solo Sunny Deol film since his 2018 box-office dud Bhaiaji Superhit, which opened at just Rs 1 crore. In contrast, Border 2 and Gadar 2 had opened at Rs 32 crore and Rs 40 crore respectively, marking a strong comeback for Sunny Deol in his late 60s.

About The Film

In Batwara 1947, Sunny Deol plays a Muslim man who migrates to Pakistan during Partition. He discovers a Hindu woman, played by Shabana Azmi, living upstairs in his home, who refuses to leave. He takes it upon himself to protect her while also safeguarding his family amidst the chaos. The film also marks Preity Zinta’s return to the big screen after nearly a decade.

Additionally, it features the first on-screen collaboration between Sunny Deol and his son, Karan Deol, who plays his son. The cast includes Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, and Kanikka Kapur.
