Celina Jaitly Peter Haag

The legal battle between actor Celina Jaitly and her estranged husband, Peter Haag, has taken a fresh turn. Weeks after an FIR was reportedly registered against Peter based on allegations made by Celina, Peter and his family have now initiated legal action against the actress. They have accused her of making false and defamatory statements amid the couple’s ongoing matrimonial and child custody dispute.

Mumbai-based law firm Semwal & Co. confirmed that two separate legal notices have been issued to Celina. One notice has been sent by Peter Haag, while the second has been issued by his father, DI Wolfgang J. Haag. According to the legal team, the notices relate to statements allegedly made by Celina through interviews, social media posts and media interactions in India and abroad.

The notices claim that matrimonial and child custody proceedings between Celina and Peter are currently underway before courts in Austria. Peter’s family has alleged that despite the matter being sub judice, several public statements containing what they describe as unverified and defamatory allegations have continued to circulate in the media.

According to the legal notices, the family has denied allegations that portray Peter Haag as abusive, manipulative, violent or emotionally oppressive. They have also rejected claims relating to domestic violence, emotional abuse, intimidation, harassment, concealment of the children, alleged brainwashing and allegations concerning religion and radicalisation.

Peter Haag Demands Public Apology Over Alleged Defamation

One of the key concerns raised by Peter’s family relates to the public discussion surrounding the couple’s children. The notices claim that repeated references to the children in media reports and social media posts have caused emotional distress and exposed them to unnecessary public scrutiny during an ongoing custody dispute.

The legal documents further allege that such actions amount to defamation under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, invasion of privacy, emotional distress and interference with ongoing judicial proceedings.

Commenting on the matter, Solicitor Yesha Shah, Partner at Semwal & Co., said, “Laws enacted for the protection of women are among the most important safeguards in a civilised society. However, when matrimonial disputes are converted into public media trials through unverified allegations and emotional narratives, the very sanctity and purpose of such laws stand diluted. Legal remedies must remain instruments of justice and protection, and not tools for public vilification or reputational destruction.”

The notices reportedly seek the removal of allegedly defamatory content, a restraint on future public statements concerning the proceedings and the children, as well as a public clarification and unconditional apology. Peter Haag and his family have also reserved the right to pursue civil and criminal proceedings, including claims for damages and compensation, if their demands are not met.

The latest development comes shortly after Mumbai Police reportedly registered an FIR against Peter Haag following a complaint filed by Celina Jaitly. According to reports, the FIR invoked provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to cruelty, physical harm, criminal intimidation and harassment. Reports also stated that a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against Peter during the investigation.

Celina Jaitly’s Recent Statement

Earlier this month, Celina publicly spoke about her ongoing custody battle. Sharing an emotional post on social media, she alleged that she had been denied access to her children despite a joint custody arrangement ordered by an Austrian court.

“The last few weeks were the most difficult of my life. I was in Austria for my divorce hearing …. Despite an undertaking before an Austrian judge, my children who were removed to an undisclosed location were not brought back to the marital residence,” she wrote.

“Despite joint custody & a subsisting order of the Austrian Family Court, I am presently DENIED ANY COMMUNICATION with my 3 children & I am heartbroken!” the actress added.
