Anjana Sukhani REACTS To Outsider Tag In Bollywood & Nepotism Debate

Anjana Sukhani has shared her candid views on the long-standing debate around nepotism in Bollywood, offering a perspective that differs from the industry’s usual discourse. While acknowledging that actors without film family connections often carry the outsider tag throughout their careers, she believes privilege should not be criticised if it is put to good use. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, Sukhani argued that star kids have every right to pursue acting, just as children often follow their parents’ careers in other fields. She also reflected on the challenges outsiders face and why persistence remains the only way forward. Scroll down to read what she said and watch the full interview.

Anjana Sukhani REACTS To Outsider Tag In Bollywood & Nepotism Debate

When asked if the outsider tag still bothers her in Bollywood, Anjana Sukhani said, “See, outsider in a way…you will always be an outsider only, purely because aapki family yahan se nahi hai. Hai na? And this whole nepotism debate, I don’t understand because I feel, why can’t an actor’s child be an actor if he wants to, or if she wants to be? Agar unke paas woh privilege hai, toh you use it. I feel whatever God has given you, see it as a gift and use it. If God has made you pretty, use it.”

She added, “If God has made you Mr Bachchan’s kid, use it. You know, why not? Of course. And if a doctor’s son wants to be a doctor, do we feel bad? Do we say, ‘Arre, why should he be a doctor?’ No. If he is proving himself, let him be. Who are we to question? So, I think this is all basically stupid.”

Anjana On Outsider Challenges

Speaking of the challenges one faces when they aren’t from a film family background, the actress said, “See, challenges, of course, are there. Challenges are there only because you strive to do more. And maybe you want to reach there, but you’re only reaching here. So that’s the journey. But again, having said that, I feel it’s still okay. I mean, you only have to do your best, and there’s nothing else in your hands. Actually, there’s nothing in your hands. You just keep your head down, keep working, keep meeting people, and see where it leads you. That’s all.”

About Bollywood’s Nepotism Debate

Bollywood’s nepotism debate is a long-standing discourse highlighting privilege, opportunity, and meritocracy within the industry. Critics argue that “star kids” benefit from automatic access to major production houses, financial backing, and media support, while outsiders often face intense scrutiny and struggle to get auditions, with many actors without connections being dismissed after a single flop. Supporters contend that, although a famous surname may help secure an initial debut, long-term success depends on audience acceptance and box-office performance, with insiders emphasising that legacy actors face immense pressure to live up to their family’s reputation.

Recent discussions have been fueled by voices like Kriti Sanon, who pointed out that the real issue is not initial opportunity but the unequal judgment faced by outsiders, and Imtiaz Ali, who highlighted the added pressure on star children. Public opinion remains divided: many online users believe nepotism allows multiple chances despite questionable talent, while surveys show that audiences acknowledge familial networks influence Bollywood but remain conflicted about whether this constitutes unfairness or just industry norm.
