Neha Dhupia is one Bollywood actress known for speaking her mind, whether on Bollywood or social conventions; once again, she addresses a relevant social issue through her role in Netflix’s Single Papa. Playing adoption agency officer Romila Nehra, the actor sheds light on how adoption continues to remain a taboo in many sections of society.
Neha Dhupia Points Out The Stigma And Judgement Around Adoption
In an exclusive interview with the cast of Single Papa, Neha opened up about the stigma and judgment that still surround adoption, while emphasising the need for more open, empathetic conversations about the subject. Read on to know what the actor had to say about portraying the show’s ‘antagonist’ and its underlying message.
Speaking about her character, Neha explained that Romila Nehra doesn’t come across as negative but rather as someone who follows procedure. “She conducts her checks and assessments and isn’t convinced that he could be a good ‘single papa’,” Neha said, adding that the character mirrors a mindset that still exists in society.
Addressing the larger issue, Neha pointed out that adoption continues to carry stigma and judgment even today. “There is still a lot of stigma and judgment that comes with adoption,” she said, while praising the show for handling such a complex subject with ease. According to her, Single Papa tackles serious themes while maintaining a fun and light-hearted tone.
Highlighting the core message of the series, Neha said the narrative challenges traditional perceptions of parenting. “The bigger picture of the show shows that everything a single mother can do, a single father can also do,” she said, noting that the makers present this idea clearly and sensitively to the audience.
Neha further added that the makers could have easily turned the subject heavy or preachy, but chose comedy instead. “The show could have been very serious, but the makers deal with it through humour, and that’s what keeps this kind of social message light, relatable and believable,” she concluded.
Through humour and honesty, Single Papa challenges parenting stereotypes, proving single fathers deserve trust, compassion and equal opportunity on screen.
