Rajat Kapoor On Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa, Working With Vinay Pathak & Ranvir Shorey
Your cinema often avoids clear heroes and villains – was it important to maintain that ambiguity even in a murder mystery?
Sure- like i said earlier, everybody is many shades of grey here. As the professor in the film predicts, ‘we are doomed’. and this world is inhabited by morally ambiguous people.
You’ve worked with actors like Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey before. How has your creative equation evolved over time?
It is always a pleasure to work with talented actors- and the pleasure is doubled if these talented collaborators are also your friends. What happens with time is that trust grows stronger, love grows more- and working together becomes even more joyous..
You favour nuance over spectacle—do you think audiences today are more open to that style?
No idea what the audience is open to. It keeps shifting every six months, and I believe it will keep changing. It’s no good trying to double guess… it makes sense to make things that you believe in.
How important is a platform like Hindi ZEE5 in backing stories that rely more on characters than star power?
It is amazing. In this era of only one kind of films- a platform like this could provide incredible content to an audience who might crave this. We need to give a bouquet to the audience, and believe in their ability to choose.
