Singer Abhay Jodhpurkar – who has sung songs in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Marathi, is widely recognized as a protégé of AR Rahman. Bollywood Bubble recently spoke to him about his latest project Gandhi Talks, collaborating once more with his mentor and more. During the chat, we also asked him his view about Arijit Singh announcing his retirement from playback singing.
While answering this, Abhay also opened on whether this announcement is a disservice to fans. Read on to know all Abhsay said.
Abhay Jodhpurkar On Arijit Singh Retiring From Playback Singing
During our exclusive interaction, we asked Abhay Jodhpurkar his thoughts on Arijit Singh taking a break/retiring from playback singing. Answering us in all honestly, the musician said, “I totally support Arijit when it comes to the decision of taking retirement because I totally understand the kind of pressures or rather cages that he has to like you know be in in order to continue to do playback singing because it can be a really cruel place and limiting place in terms of you know what you really want to do. Sometimes as playback singers or artists we don’t really get the freedom to do a song or render a song based on what how we want to express it. So I’m sure that must be one of the reasons.”
He continued, “And as a creative person, one must always be given the freedom to explore other areas. And I think when it comes to achieving something as a playback singer, I think he has achieved more than what one person can accomplish in one lifetime. So I think he deserves a time off from it.” He further noted, “As an artist, of course. There comes a saturation point where you feel like enough of it, enough is enough and I want to change the gears, I want to do something else. So I totally support him, and kudos to him for taking such a grand decision.”
Abhay: I Think Arijit’s Retirement Is A Very Subdued Protest Against The Music Mafia
When asked if he feels this retirement is a a disservice towards fans, Abhay Jodhpurkar said, “Of course, as a fan, it’s disappointing. But it just means that we’ll be hearing him in another setting. And as we recently did, we heard him sing, doing a cassette with Anushka Shankar for a concert in Kolkata. That was so beautiful. It was all classically driven, and it was quality music. It was not commercial crap, you know. So I think more power to him for a decision like that. And he wants to focus on his direction career. Great for him.”
He continued, “Does it mean that we won’t hear songs of Arijit anymore? No, that’s not the case. He’s very much going to be doing music and independent music, but not film music, which is totally understandable considering how trashy it has become now. In a way, it’s a silent protest against the labels because it’s the labels who are powerful right now and they take the calls. They take the decisions of how a song should be or what are the parameters to make a song. It’s become more about the numbers rather than the quality of the music.”
He concluded by stating, “I think it’s a very subdued or silent protest against the music mafia. And kudos to him for that. He has the power to do it and he has done it. And I’m so proud of him for that.”
