EXCLUSIVE: Smita Bansal Opens Up On Breaking Free From Her Television Image; Says, “No Actor Wants To Be Predictable”

For years, Smita Bansal has been a popular face on Indian television and has won hearts with her performances in hit shows like Balika Vadhu, Aladdin, Bhagya Lakshmi, and many others. Over the years, she has also made a mark in the OTT space with projects like Rangeen and, most recently, The Pyramid Scheme. Now, the versatile actress is gearing up for her upcoming Colors TV show, 108 Base Hospital Uri, where she will be seen playing the role of Senior Dean of an Army hospital, a role she has never portrayed before. Each new project has seen Smita stepping into roles that are starkly different from each other, marking a refreshing new phase in her career.

Smita Bansal On Choosing Unpredictable Roles

When asked if this change in her role choices was a deliberate attempt to reinvent herself, Smita said that the journey has been more about self-discovery than changing her image. “I don’t think I went out to reinvent myself. I think I was on a search for myself again. After being on television for so many years, people get used to seeing you in a certain space, and somewhere even you start believing that is where you belong,” she said talking to Bollywood Bubble.

Now, she is looking for roles that will challenge her creatively, the actress added. “I got to a point where I wanted to surprise myself first. If a role excites me, scares me a little, makes me wonder if I can do it, that’s usually a good sign,” added Smita, emphasising how stepping out of her comfort zone has become an important part of her journey as an actor.

Smita Bansal On The Last Few Projects

Smita’s choices over the last few projects, be it Rangeen, The Pyramid Scheme, or her upcoming 108 Base Hospital Uri, have been distinct from each other. With each show, the actress has also been willing to experiment, which has allowed the audience to see a different side of the actress, and they have loved it.

“Yes, I hope so,” Smita said, speaking about whether these risks have changed the way the industry and viewers perceive her. No actor wants to be routine. “Everyone wants to challenge themselves and do something different and try something new.” She added, “One of the nicest compliments I’ve had recently is, ‘I wasn’t expecting this from you’ and that is really lovely. So I hope people’s perception continues to change.”

While Smita Bansal is still exploring her horizons across television and OTT, she is looking at doing meaningful and challenging roles rather than sticking to familiar terrains. As 108 Base Hospital Uri nears, viewers can expect to see yet another new side of the actress who feels that real growth comes from always rediscovering herself.
