Pallavi Joshi On CBFC Guidelines
When asked whether films today undergo just censorship or are also being self-censored, Pallavi Joshi answered, “Both, both. Dono hi sahi bhi hain aur ek level tak dono galat bhi hain. Kyunki hota kya hai, humare yahan CBFC jo hai, woh ek certification board hai. By law, constitutionally, they are not allowed to ask for any changes. Unka kaam sirf yeh hai ki aapki film dekhein aur usko ek rating dein. But what happens in most cases is ki kabhi-kabhi usme aise incidents ya words aa jaate hain, ya kuch double-meaning type content hota hai.”
Explaining the censorship guidelines, she added, “Toh guidelines hain CBFC ki, ki agar yeh hai toh content adult category mein jayega, ya Universal Adult milega, ya U certificate milega. Uske hisaab se woh certify karte hain. Nobody wants an adult certificate, kyunki phir audience kaafi restricted ho jaati hai. Producers chahte hain ki poori audience aa ke dekhe. Toh phir woh kehte hain, ‘Nahi, humein U certificate chahiye.’ Tab CBFC bolta hai, ‘Theek hai, toh phir yeh cheez nikaaliye. Agar U certificate chahiye, toh yeh cut karna padega.'”
“Fir makers apna certificate le kar chale jaate hain. Uske baad, bahar aa ke bola jaata hai ki ‘humein scenes cut karne ko kaha gaya.’ Yeh bhi hota hai.”, she says.
Pallavi Joshi On OMG 2
Talking about the censorship in OMG 2, Pallavi Joshi said, “And sometimes, kuch cheezein hoti hain jo ek alag type ke cinema ke liye essential hoti hain. Jaise kabhi-kabhi scenes aise hote hain jo nikal nahi sakte, kyunki unke bina story ka impact hi nahi banta. Aur kabhi-kabhi zaroori bhi hota hai ki young audience usse dekhe, kyunki wo film unke liye bani hai. Jaise Oh My God 2, woh ek teenager par based thi. Aur irony yeh thi ki usko hi dekhne ki permission teenagers ko nahi thi. Toh point hi kya bacha? Mujhe lagta hai ki haan, guidelines honi chahiyein, bilkul. But jaise samay badalta hai aur humari films evolve hoti hain, waise hi guidelines bhi badalni chahiyein.”
Pallavi Joshi will be seen in The Bengal Files releasing in cinemas on 5th September.
