Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri Reacts To Mamata Banerjee’s Political Setback
Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri has reacted to the recent political outcome in West Bengal after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reportedly lost the Bhabanipur seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. The result has triggered widespread discussion online, given Bhabanipur’s long-standing association with Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress.

A day after the results, Agnihotri shared an old video on X along with a detailed note revisiting his past experiences in the state, particularly around the controversies linked to The Bengal Files and The Kashmir Files.
He wrote, “For those who don’t know, Mamata Banerjee cancelled me in Bengal after the release of #TheKashmirFiles. The film was taken out of cinema halls, and she said I would NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER Bengal. Last year, she BANNED #TheBengalFiles completely in West Bengal. Our trailer launch was blocked. We were attacked and assaulted. Dozens of FIRs were filed against me. I was cancelled in Bengal. I couldn’t even go to receive my award from the Governor.”

He further added, “But we never gave up. During these elections, we ensured that #TheBengalFiles was shown to as many people as possible (underground) across Bengal. I am glad we didn’t give up and fought in our own little way. And finally… this unprecedented victory. Congratulations to the great people of Bengal. Now you can walk without fear, with your head held high.”
Shortly after his post went viral, many social media users urged him to consider re-releasing The Bengal Files in West Bengal.
About The Bengal Files
Released in September 2025, The Bengal Files, directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, is a historical drama-thriller. The film follows a CBI officer investigating the disappearance of a journalist. The investigation gradually exposes long-buried and violent episodes from 1946, including the Direct Action Day (Great Calcutta Killings) and the Noakhali riots.
The film is helmed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and features an ensemble cast including Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, and Darshan Kumaar. It is positioned as the third instalment in his Files series, following The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files.
