Ahead of ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, here’s how the last five Diwali releases performed at box office

‘Krrish 3’

This Hrithik Roshan starrer once again saw star reuniting with his father Rakesh Roshan. The film turned out be a bumper hit and it was well received by the audiences. The film did smashing business at the box office and grossed over Rs 175,83,50,000 (Over Rs 175 crore) (Figures-Box Office India).

‘Happy New Year’

Shah Rukh Khan and Diwali has a special connection. In 2014, SRK's 'Happy New Year' got released which was directed by Farah Khan. The film had an ensemble cast, which included Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan. The film did commercially well despite getting average and mixed reviews form the critics. The SRK starrer minted Rs 178,41,00,000 (Over 178 crore) at the box office. (Figures-Box Office India).

‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’

Salman Khan generally has his releases on 'Eid' but in 2015, he acted in Sooraj Barjatya's family entertainer 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' alongside Sonam Kapoor. As usual, Sallu bhai's film became a hit and again proved that Salman Khan is the real box office king. The film earned Rs 194,30,50,000 (Over 194 crore) at the box office. ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’

Karan Johar directorial 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' released in 2016 during Diwali. The film starred Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in titular roles. The film was a serious romantic drama and story of great conflict. 'ADHM' also had its fair share of controversies, including presence of Pakistani star Fawad Khan in the film. ‘Shivaay’

Ajay Devgn returned as director with 'Shivaay. The film was not a commercial film. 'Shivvay' was also competing with 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' and was received not that great by the audiences. ‘Secret Superstar’

2017 Diwali saw 'Dangal' girl Zaira Wasim playing the role of an aspiring singer who is fighting her father and society. Aamir Khan also had a cameo in this film and it was one of the biggest hits of 2017. 'Secret Superstar' earned Rs 62,63,00,000 at the box office and surprised many people. ‘Thugs of Hindostan’

Now, coming to this year's Diwali, we have Aamir Khan starrer 'Thugs of Hindostan releasing. The movie is a historical drama and is predicted to be a hit. Can 'TOH' beat 'Dangal's record and become the highest grossing Indian film of all time? That only time will tell.
