Mothers are called a one-woman army and they don’t lie about it as they will go through hell and back to raise their kids, single or with their partner. But, even though single moms are celebrated and respected in society now, there are still quite a lot of troubles that a single mother has to go through even today. Many celebrity moms have opened up about their times of being single mothers and how their journey has unravelled. From Shweta Tiwari going through two divorces to Sushmita Sen facing judgements about adopting kids at a young age, these celeb moms have overlooked the preying eyes like dust off their shoulders.

Karisma Kapoor

Karisma Kapoor tied the knot with businessman Sanjay Kapur back in 2003. The couple were blessed with a daughter Samaira in 2005 and son Kiaan in the year 2010. Unfortunately, things fell off between Karisma and Sanjay and the two parted ways in 2016. Karisma then raised her two kids single-handedly eversince. The actress has been quite an inspiration to the single moms out there. Talking about being a single mom, Karisma had said in her book, My Yummy Mummy Guide, “Just because you are a single parent, you do not need to make up for the spouse’s love by buying your child everything she wants. Be firm on what you can give and what you do not want to give. Set clear boundaries, timings, structures and routines. Keep to the same schedule and pattern as when you were married.”

Sushmita Sen

Actress Sushmita Sen had adopted a girl child- Renee, in 2000, when she was just 24 years old. Many questioned it. Why adoption? How will you raise a child without being married? Are you ready to be a single parent? You realise the impact this decision will have on your professional & personal life? The questioning & opinions were endless…And yet, I did what felt right in my heart. I knew I was ready to be a mother. And it turned out to be the best decision I ever made, one so profound…I made it twice!!?❤️?? Now I am blessed with two beautiful daughters: Renee and Alisah ❤️.”

Shweta Tiwari

Shweta Tiwari welcomed daughter Palak from her first marriage to Raja Chaudhary. Unfortunately, things did not work out between Shweta and Raja and the actress filed for a divorce in 2007 after nine years of marriage. Shweta then single-handedly raised Palak and her son Reyansh who was born from her marriage with Armaan Kohli. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Palak opened up about supporting her mother through the emotional crisis in their life, “It was never difficult. Because, the way I have seen it, there are people that have things much worse. That have actual issues in life. And with us, yes, it was a personal life issue, it was something we had to deal with. But, for me, it was never a choice. There was only one person, one woman, that I have admired holistically, and that’s been my mother. And, for me, she could never do no wrong then, and she could never do no wrong now. And so, when she tells me ‘Luvu we’re doing this’ Ok, I don’t mind.”

Since then, Amrita has raised Sara and Ibrahim as a single mom. Talking about having a single mother in Bollywood, Sara had earlier told TOI, “Living with a single mother in today’s day and age makes you a little tougher than you need to be. You don’t live in a La La Land for too long, then. You see the world for what it is.”

Neena Gupta

Neena Gupta was married to West-Indian cricketer, Vivian Richards and the couple was blessed with daughter Masaba in 1989. Things did not work out between Neena and Vivian and the Badhai Ho actress raised Masaba on her own. Talking about being a single mom to Masaba, Neena had once said in an interview with TOI, “If you’re bringing up a child alone, there are bound to be problems and less quality time given to them. But that happens to all working women. It also happens when both parents are working. People have to leave their children in crèches. Sometimes I think all mothers are single mothers these days because they go out to work, then come back and cook, do the homework with kids, so it’s a difficult life.”
