Rekha Birthday Special: The quintessential diva’s journey from a nobody to a ruling queen
Rekha, born as Bhanurekha Ganesan to South superstar Gemini Ganesan and actress Pushpavalli, started working early in Telugu films as a child artist. She was fat, dusky and could not speak Hindi and had to face a lot of criticism when she marked her Bollywood debut in 'Sawan Bhado'.
It was only in the 80's that she decided to turn criticism for her look into appriciation by making changes in her diet, way of livig and fitness. Years of perseverance, diet changes and multiple skin-lightening treatments, made Rekha a swan from an ugly duckling.
She was mocked for her accent that she went on to change by sheer hard work. In fact, she was so dedicated to garner appreciation for her impeccable Hindi that she used to dub for other actresses too. She also took lessons to speak fluent Urdu for 'Umrao Jaan' that is remembered to this day as one of her classic films.
Not many know that Rekha prefers to do her own make up and is even her own stylist. She was Bollywood's answer to Jane Fonda and had even released her video on her excercise routine. The diva swears by drinking 10-12 glasses of water everyday, indulges in Ayurvedic spas at home and maintains a healthy eating habit. She ensures that she eats the last meal of the day by 7.30 pm, so that her body gets enough time for digestion.
Though Rekha started her journey as an ugly duckling, she soon metamorphosed into a stunning beauty. Today, the lady is an inspiration for newcomers. Though she has become a recluse, her outings at award nights and bashes are eagerly awaited by all.
Here's wishing the timeless beauty a very happy birthday.
