Over 2 decades ago, Anupam Kher made audiences across the nation emotional with the releases of his emotional family drama, Om Jai Jagadish. He’s now back in the director’s seat with another emotional drama that tells a heartwarming story of a 21-year-old woman suffering from autism – Tanvi The Great.

The just-released film follows the life Tanvi (Shubhangi Dutt), an autistic protagonist who heads to the military cantonment area Lansdowne, Uttarakhand to live with her grand father retired Colonel Pratap Raina (Anupam Kher) as her mother, Vidya (Pallavi Joshi) has to travel abroad owing to work commitments, While there – inspired by her now-deceased father, Captain Samar Raina’s (Karan Tacker) dream of saluting the Indian flag at Siachen Glacier, Tanvi decides to fulfil his dream – as he died in a mine blast while on duty, by joining the army and saluting the flag in his stead. What follows is a journey filled with hope, determination, emotions and a scripts that’s exhausting and dragged.

What Works

Anupam Kher is impressive as Colonel Raina be his in the way he handles his emotions when reunited with his grand daughter or with the way he navigates life. The intent of the film – to celebrate the indomitable spirit of a neurodivergent youngster, is commendable.

What Doesn’t Work

Shubhangi Dutt’s performance as an autistic 21-year-old is inconsistent and unconvincing. The script is half-baked with a dragged screen play filled with several loop holes and moment where you will say – Seriously?! That’s not how things are done.

Technical Analysis

Cinematography

Keiko Nakahara’s cinematography is commendable, especially when it comes to capturing the mountains and valleys and all the other beauty of Lansdowne. While the visuals of Uttarakhand are chef’s kiss, the CGI used for Kashmir, especially Siachen Glacier is unappealing.

Editing

Tushar Parekh’s editing is good, however a discussion with Kher to shorten the run time – even by 15 minutes, would have worked in its favour.

Music

MM Keeravani’s music is pleasant, however, it’s Kausar Munir’s lyrics that truly elevate the songs and touch the soul.

Tanvi The Great Cast

Shubhangi Dut – who makes her acting debut with Tanvi The Great, has a strong screen presence however she faulters at several instances when it comes to convincing the audience that she’s a autistic individual. Anupam Kher (the director) has captures the perfection of Anupam Kher (the actor) beautifully. From his expressions – be it hurt, pride or love, to the mannerism of a retired army officer, Kher’s decades-long experience is evident in every frame.

Pallavi Joshi offers ample support Vidya – the loving and understand mother of an autistic kid who aims at making live better for others who suffer from the same neurodevelopment disorder. Jackie Shroff commands the screen as Brigadier Joshi showcasing his acting range even more than what we’ve seen to date. Boman Irani – as music teacher Raza Sahab, is eccentric but lovable. Iain Glen, Arvind Swami, and Nassar in their limited role deliver. Karan Tacker has limited screen time – we wish we got a few more glimpses of him and a young Tanvi to justify her want to fulfil his dream years later.

Conclusion

Anupam Kher and Shubhangi Dutt’s Tanvi The Great is a good watch only for the message they want to convey – not only do neurodivergent individuals have dream, but they also have the determination to achieve them and be self reliant, and the emotions its filled with. However, the plot holes, the unnecessary twists and Dutt trying too hard, gets too much to digest. Skip it in theatres, but do watch it when it releases on OTT.
