Trisha Krishnan Vijay Suriya Karuppu

Suriya and Trisha Krishnan’s much-awaited Tamil thriller Karuppu finally released in theatres on May 14. However, the excitement surrounding the film quickly turned into confusion after its scheduled early morning screenings were abruptly cancelled just hours before release. The unexpected development left fans frustrated, especially because the makers had earlier confirmed special 9 AM shows with approval from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Thalapathy.

Suriya, Trisha Krishnan’s Karuppu Early Screenings Cancelled

The confusion began late at night when producer SR Prabhu shared an update on X (formerly Twitter). Around 1 AM, he announced, “Due to unavoidable reasons 9am shows will be cancelled for Karuppu. Our sincere apologies to everyone.” (sic) However, the statement did not explain the exact issue behind the cancellation.

Soon after, social media was filled with questions from disappointed fans. Many had already booked tickets and planned their day around the first-day-first-show screenings. Several users demanded clarity regarding revised timings and theatre availability.

One fan asked, “Is it only for Tamil Nadu theatres? What about Keralam?” Another wrote, “Bro be clear about 9.30 & 9.45 am shows also!!! What about those?” Some users also criticised the lack of communication from the team. One frustrated fan commented, “WTF is this clarification, should we take a day off and wait the entire day tomorrow as well ??? Will the shows start at 12 pm or 6 pm? Give us a clear explanation.”

Karuppu Makers Break Silence

Amid the growing uncertainty, director RJ Balaji addressed audiences through social media. Although he did not disclose the exact cause of the issue, he assured fans that the team was actively working to resolve it. He also reflected on the long journey behind the film’s production.

In his note, RJ Balaji wrote, “This film has always had hurdles, and somehow God has made us sail through all that, and here we are after 32 months. This time as well, I have faith, complete faith in him.”

His message quickly gained traction online, with many fans appreciating his calm and optimistic response during the tense situation. The production team later clarified refund procedures for affected audiences. According to reports, online ticket bookings would receive refunds within four to five business days. Meanwhile, viewers who purchased tickets directly from theatres could collect refunds at their respective cinema counters.

Several reports also suggested that screenings might begin from 11:30 AM instead of 9 AM. However, the makers had not officially confirmed revised timings at the time of reporting.

CM Vijay Approves Karuppu Release

The situation drew even more attention because the makers had recently celebrated receiving permission for special early morning shows. Earlier this week, Dream Warrior Pictures publicly thanked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay for approving the 9 AM screenings.

In their social media post, the banner wrote, “Special thanks to our honourable Chief Minister Thiru. Joseph Vijay for granting the special permission for the 9 AM shows of #Karuppu. #Karuppu – FDFS begins at 9 AM, from May 14th.”

The approval itself had created significant excitement among fans, especially since early morning screenings have become less frequent in Tamil cinema in recent years due to crowd-management concerns.

Written and directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu stars Suriya and Trisha Krishnan in lead roles. The film also features Indrans, Sshivada, Natty, and Swasika in important parts. Sai Abhyankkar has composed the music, while Dream Warrior Pictures has produced the project under the banner of SR Prabhu and SR Prakash Babu.
