EXCLUSIVE: Kanika Maheshwari Believes Growth Comes Only From Taking Risks; Says, “An Actor Should Never Stop Experimenting”

Kanika Maheshwari believes that an actor’s journey should never become predictable, and experimenting with different characters is an important part of staying creatively alive. During an exclusive interaction, the actress got candid about why one should play challenging characters and not only parts they are comfortable with and more. Read on to know all she said.

Kanika Maheshwari: The Moment We Become Comfortable, We Stop Growing As Performers

With over 25 years in the television industry, Kanika Maheshwari feels that every new role brings an opportunity to discover something different within oneself. The actress says, “I strongly believe that an actor should never stop experimenting. The moment we become comfortable doing only what we already know, we stop growing as performers. Every character should challenge you in some way and make you explore a side of yourself that perhaps you have never brought on screen before.”

The ‘Seher Hone Ko Hai’ actress adds, “For me, experimentation is not only about playing a completely different character or changing your appearance. It is also about understanding different emotions, situations and perspectives. As an actor, you constantly learn from the people around you, from your co-stars, directors and even from life itself. Sometimes a small change in the way you approach a scene can teach you something new, and that learning eventually reflects in your performance.”

Kanika: An Actor Should Not Be Afraid Of Making Mistakes While Experimenting

Talking about how television gave her the freedom to experiment, Kanika Maheshwari adds, “Television has given me the opportunity to portray different kinds of women and experience different phases as an actor. I feel fortunate that my journey has allowed me to keep exploring. Every role comes with its own responsibility, and I enjoy the process of finding the emotional core of a character rather than approaching every performance in the same manner. That keeps the craft exciting for me.”

Furthermore she shares, “An actor should not be afraid of making mistakes while experimenting. Of course, you may try something and realise that it does not work the way you imagined, but even that becomes a learning experience. I would rather take a creative risk than remain within a comfort zone simply because it feels safe. Audiences are also constantly evolving, and as performers, we need to evolve with them while remaining honest to the character.”

Kanika Maheshwari concludes, “After spending so many years in this profession, I still feel there is so much left to learn and explore. That curiosity is what keeps an actor going. I don’t want to ever reach a point where I feel I have done everything. There should always be another character, another emotion and another challenge waiting to be discovered. For me, that is the beauty of being an actor.”
