The definition of success in the entertainment industry is changing, and actress Kanika Maheshwari – who is currently seen as Husna Aara in Seher – Hone Ko Hai, believes it’s time the industry embraces that change. While Television Rating Points (TRPs) have traditionally been considered the biggest indicator of a show’s popularity, Kanika feels that today’s audience consumes content in far more diverse ways.
According to her, a show’s journey doesn’t end on television anymore it continues across OTT platforms, social media, and countless conversations among viewers. Read on to know all she had to say.
Kanika Maheshwari: Organic Appreciation Cannot Be Reflected In A Weekly TRP Chart
Talking about why TRP shouldn’t be the only parameter on which a show’s success is gauged, Kanika Maheshwari said, “I genuinely feel that a show should never be measured only by its TRPs. Ratings can tell you how many people watched at a particular time, but they don’t tell you how deeply a story touched someone’s heart.”
She continued, “Today, viewers have countless ways to watch content. Some stream episodes on OTT after work, others discover scenes through social media, while many start watching a show because friends recommended it. Those audiences are equally important, and their love deserves to be acknowledged.”
The ‘Diya Aur Baati Hum’ actress continued, “Social media has completely transformed the relationship between a show and its audience. One powerful scene can travel across the country within minutes. Dialogues become trends, fan pages create beautiful edits, reels go viral, and discussions continue long after an episode has aired. That kind of organic appreciation cannot be reflected in a weekly TRP chart. In today’s world, engagement, conversations, and emotional reactions have become just as meaningful as television ratings.”
Kanika: The Longevity Of A Show Is Determined By Its Emotional Impact Not Statistics
Further talking about emotions upping ratings, Kanika Maheshwari continued, “I also believe that the longevity of a show is determined by its emotional impact rather than statistics. Some shows may not break TRP records every week, but years later people still remember the characters, the performances, and the emotions they experienced while watching them. As an actor, that’s the biggest achievement. If audiences continue to talk about your work, revisit your scenes, and connect with your character long after the show has aired, you’ve created something timeless.”‘
She further stated, “We are living in an era where entertainment exists across multiple platforms, and success should be viewed through a much wider lens. Television remains incredibly important, but it is no longer the only destination for storytelling. OTT platforms and social media have become powerful spaces where content finds new audiences every single day. A show’s success should be measured by its reach, relevance, cultural impact, and the conversations it sparks not just by one number.”
Concluding her thoughts, Kanika Maheshwari said, “TRPs will always have their significance, and I respect the system completely. But I hope we also begin celebrating stories for the lives they touch, the memories they create, and the communities they build. At the end of the day, audiences remember emotions, not ratings. A story that stays alive in people’s hearts is the greatest success any show can ever achieve.”
