Delhi HC Appoints Mediator In Dhurandhar 2 Rang De Lal Song Copyright Case

The Delhi High Court has referred the copyright dispute over the song “Rang De Lal” from Dhurandhar 2 to mediation. This aims to resolve the issues related to royalties and licensing between Trimurti Films and B62 Studios. Trimurti Films alleges that the song in Dhurandhar 2 incorporates unauthorised music from Tirchi Topiwala. It’s an old track from the 1989 film Tridev starring Sunny Deol. They claim to hold the music rights for the original song.

Justice Tushar Rao Gedela observed that the core of the dispute appears to be financial. He suggested that the parties could settle matters of royalty and compensation through mediation. The court also ordered the appointment of a senior mediator to oversee the process, according to Bar and Bench.

Trimurti Films contends that the use of the song, or a substantially similar version, in Dhurandhar 2 was done without proper licensing. Their complaint covers the song’s theatrical release, digital availability, and promotional activities related to the film.

Senior Advocate Swathi Sukumar, representing Trimurti Films, argued that the use of the music—especially its standalone presence on digital platforms—was unauthorised. Conversely, Senior Advocate Akhil Sibal, representing Super Cassettes (which holds the audio rights for Dhurandhar 2’s songs), opposed any interim relief for Trimurti Films.

Sibal accused Trimurti Films of approaching the court with unclean hands. He alleged they failed to disclose previous instances where similar songs from Tridev had been used in other films. Senior Advocate Ravi Prakash, representing B62 Films, informed the court that Dhurandhar 2 has already been released in theatres. However, it is unlikely to be available on OTT platforms before mid-May.

The mediation aims to resolve the ongoing financial and licensing disagreements surrounding the song.
