Diljit Dosanjh NO Longer An Indian? Singer Said ‘NEVER’ To Punjab Politics Owing To US Citizenship

Diljit Dosanjh, whose proud declaration “Main Hoon Punjab” (I am Punjab) reflects his strong cultural roots, reportedly acquired US citizenship in 2022. Since then, the Punjabi singer-actor has been travelling to India using a US passport and an e-visa, according to a recent report.

Diljit Dosanjh Acquired US Citizenship?

The Indian Express states that Dosanjh is no longer an Indian citizen. It further reports that he has been entering India on an e-visa since September 2022, which sources suggest indicates he does not possess an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. The report details that his last Indian passport was issued in Mumbai in 2018, with an earlier passport issued in Zambia.

It also mentions that his wife, Sandeep Kaur, is a US national, and that Dosanjh listed a five-bedroom bungalow in California as his residence when obtaining American citizenship. This revelation comes amid speculation about his potential entry into Punjab politics, following a civil society group’s appeal for him to take on a leadership role in the state.

Diljit To Enter Politics?

A group called Jaago Punjab Manch, comprising retired bureaucrats, military personnel, and professionals, publicly urged Dosanjh to enter politics, describing him as a leader Punjab, struggling with issues like drug abuse and financial hardship, needs. However, Dosanjh firmly dismissed the idea. Sharing a report on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Kadey v Nhi… Mera Kam Entertainment Karna. Am Very Happy in My Field. Thank You So Much.”

How To Enter Indian Politics?

The Indian Express adds that if Dosanjh ever considers entering politics in the future, he would first need to regain Indian citizenship. According to Section 6 of the Indian Citizenship Act, a foreign national must meet certain residency criteria—residing in India for at least 12 years before applying—and must have continuous residence during the 12 months immediately prior to the application, as well as 11 out of the previous 14 years.
