The Federation of Western India Cine Employees, which represents various movie artists, has called for a boycott of Pakistani artists, singers, and technicians in the Indian film industry following the 2019 Pulwama terror attack that killed 35 paramilitary personnel. In light of the recent Pahalgam attack, the organisation renewed its directive. They stated, “Despite the ongoing directive, we’ve been made aware of the recent collaboration with Pakistani actor Fawad Khan for the Hindi film, ‘Abir Gulaal’. In light of the recent attack in Pahalgam, FWICE is once again compelled to issue a blanket boycott on all Pakistani artists, singers and technicians participating in any Indian film or entertainment projects. This includes performances or collaborations occurring anywhere in the world.” Furthermore, they stated, “We will take all necessary steps to ensure that ‘Abir Gulaal’ is not released in India.”
Discussing the film Abir Gulaal, directed by Aarti S Bagdi, it is currently facing numerous challenges ahead of its planned release on May 9. Earlier, there had already been a voiced opposition to the film. It cited the lead actor Fawad Khan’s Pakistani nationality as a reason for their objection. In light of the nation’s mourning over the recent tragic attack, the backlash against the film has intensified. It has uncertainty about its release as scheduled.
Ban On Pakistani Artists In 2016
Pakistani artists who were once celebrated for their contributions to Hindi films have encountered resistance in India. The relations between the two countries deteriorate due to acts of terrorism. In 2016, following the Uri terror attack that killed 19 Indian soldiers, Pakistani artists were barred from participating in the Indian film and music industry. Fawad Khan was then very popular in India. However, the Kapoor and Sons actor faced backlash for his role in Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Johar subsequently apologised, stating he would not collaborate with Pakistani artists in the future. The 2017 film Raees, featuring Pakistani actress Mahira Khan, also faced difficulties.
