After sharing screenspace in several films – such as Kuch Naa Kaho, Dhoom 2, Sarkar Raj, Umrao Jaan, Guru and Raavan, first friendship and then love blossomed between Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. After dating for a while, the duo – who initial met in 1999 for the photo shoot of their first film together Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke, tied the knot on April 20, 2007. While the entire nation waited with bated breath in front of their television screens (unlike today) for a glimpse of Aishwarya’s bridal avatar, fans weren’t lucky enough for a complete details look. In fact, till today, not many pictures from their wedding are available on the internet. However, based on the few glimpses that did go viral, we know the actress looked like a goddess in a gold saree and traditional jewellery.

As per multiple media reports, Aishwarya Rai wore a golden Kanjeevaram saree for her wedding to Abhishek Bachchan. The traditional yellow and gold saree – designed by ace designer Neeta Lulla, featured real gold threadwork and was studded with Swarovski crystals. The saree – considered one of the most expensive sarees ever, was priced at Rs. 75 lakhs.

Aishwarya accessorised her look with precious gold and diamond jewellery. Her 22-karat gold jewellery consisted of a heavy kundan and emerald necklace, emerald and gold armband, two kundan haars, matching jhumkas, matha patti and bajubandh.

While no much official communication happened with regards to Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai’s wedding, their unions was part of headlines for a number of reasons.

5000+ Guests – As per some media reports, the ‘wedding of the decade’ (as many called it) saw over 5000 people in attendance. This guestlist includes some of Bollywood’s top names as well as politicians and businessmen.

Hired Helicopters To Shower Petals – As per some media outlets, the Bachchans and Rais reprotedly hired several helicopters to fly over the wedding location and shower petals on the newlyweds.

Aishwarya Getting Married To A Tree – Another absurd headlines 19 years ago was that of Miss World 1994 tying the knot to a tress before getting married to Abhishek Bachchan. As per speculative theories, Aishwarya Rai was a maanglik, and so, in order to ward off anything inauspicious for the couple, she was first being married to a tree.

While the couple never spoke anything about it, years later, Amitabh Bachchan rubbished it as a piece of rumour.
