Badshah and Payal Dev had come together for ‘Genda Phool’ which has a touch of distinct urban sound mixed with a folk melody. The song has one line “Borlok er Bitilo, lomba lomba chul…..lal genda phool” which is apparently lifted from the Bengali folk song ‘Borloker Bitilo’. The original lyrics are penned by Ratan Kahar, but he wasn’t given any credit in Badshah’s song. And that amounts to the violation of Indian Copyright Amendment Act 2012.

Now as per a report in India Blooms,  Arghya Bose, a Doctoral researcher in France wrote to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, “In the capacity of a common but responsible citizen of your state, Madam Chief Minister, I feel obliged and responsible to bring to your notice exploitation of the poor artists of the state of West Bengal at this level by apparently world-renowned artists. It is, indeed, the moral responsibility of the entire population of the state, and more so, the government of the state to protect the interests of the artistic communities of our country.”

Bose also requested the West Bengal CM to obtain for Ratan the intellectual and material remuneration from the makers of ‘Genda Phool’.

Badshah and the music label Sony Music India which produced ‘Genda Phool’ are yet to respond to these allegations.
