About Satyajit Ray, Career

For those unfamiliar, Ray made his directorial debut in 1955 with Pather Panchali. It garnered international acclaim and recognition at the Cannes Film Festival. Over his illustrious career, he created some of Indian cinema’s most iconic classics. It includes Aparajito, Apur Sansar, Charulata, Nayak, Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, Shatranj Ke Khilari, and Ghare Baire.

His work transcended borders, making him a global cinematic icon. Ray directed over 35 films, documentaries, and short films over nearly four decades, inspiring generations of filmmakers worldwide. He passed away on April 23, 1992, in Kolkata at the age of 70, after battling heart-related health issues. Just weeks before his death, he was honoured with an honorary Academy Award for his extraordinary contributions to cinema.
