The Madras High Court has granted relief to filmmaker Boney Kapoor and his daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor. In a property dispute linked to late actor Sridevi’s East Coast Road (ECR) land in Tamil Nadu. The court rejected a plea challenging the ownership of the property and termed the claim “vexatious.” Observing that the lawsuit amounted to an abuse of the legal process.
Madras HC Rejects Challenge To Sridevi’s Chennai Land Ownership
The dispute revolved around a 4.77-acre property on Chennai’s East Coast Road that Sridevi had reportedly purchased in 1988 from Sambandam Mudaliyar. However, three individuals approached the Additional District Court in Chengalpattu in 2025 claiming rights over the land. The plaintiffs identified themselves as descendants of the original seller and sought ownership claims over the property.
Following the lawsuit, Boney Kapoor, along with Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, moved the Chengalpattu court seeking rejection of the plaint. However, the district court refused to dismiss the suit, prompting the family to approach the Madras High Court.
According to court records, one of the claimants, Chandrabanu. She argued that she was entitled to a share in the property as the wife of Chandrasekharan. However, it was also noted that she was Chandrasekharan’s second wife and that he had been previously married.
What Madras HC Ordered?
In its recent order, Justice T.V. Thamilselvi observed that the lower court should have rejected the lawsuit at the initial stage itself. The judge stated that the claim made against Boney Kapoor and his daughters was “vexatious” and added that the cause of action against them was not legally sustainable.
The court further observed that the plaintiffs had attempted to misuse the legal process in an effort to obtain rights over the property. According to the ruling, “the current lawsuit was brought by exploiting the legal system in order to get the property through a vexatious claim, which is illegal.”
With the High Court setting aside the lower court’s order, the ruling now brings major relief to Boney Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor in the long-running dispute connected to Sridevi’s ECR property.
