'OG Lakshman’ Sunil Lahri Questions If Audience Will Accept Ranbir Kapoor As Lord Rama After Ramayana Teaser Release

The veteran actor reacted to the teaser with a measured perspective, appreciating its scale while feeling that certain emotional layers could have been stronger. Scroll down to read more.

Sunil Lahiri Shares His Take On Ramayana Teaser

The teaser has received a mixed response online, with viewers divided between admiration for its grandeur and criticism of its visual effects. Sharing his opinion with PTI, Sunil Lahri said, “I liked and disliked certain things in the teaser. I can only wish and hope that they will make a landmark film for our country, present our culture properly, and evoke the right emotions among the world audience through Ramayana.”

While Lahri acknowledged Ranbir Kapoor’s talent, he questioned whether the actor would be embraced in such an iconic role. “Ranbir is no doubt a very good actor. I really like his body of work, and he will definitely perform very well. But will the audience accept him as Ram or not is the question,” he said.

He also highlighted a particular moment in the teaser that didn’t quite work for him. The actor shared, “The scene where Ranbir steps out in the light, the innocence that the first appearance should have had, it was not there. I didn’t like that, I felt it was a little harsh, the innocence was missing.”

Sunil Lahiri Traces Back To His Ramayana Days

Although Lahri appreciated the film’s visual elements, music, and scale, he emphasized that emotional depth is essential for a story like Ramayana. Sunil said, “If there is no emotion, then the painting is not good. The look of Ranbir was good. The music was also good and the effects created were good. Overall, it was good. I hope they don’t make blunders. If they think they want to show themselves differently, and do something where people will say, ‘wow’, then they should understand that the wow factor (referring to visuals) doesn’t work here; it works in science fiction films.”

The actor also voiced his disappointment over how demons were portrayed in the teaser, saying they appeared overly stylised—almost like characters from a Hollywood sci-fi universe. Reflecting on his time working on Ramayan, Lahri contrasted the approach taken back then. “What we made was very basic. Although the effects were not that strong, it was close to reality. Look at the costumes, the crowns were made of solid brass, they were heavy,” he said.

The actor further added, “There was no AC, there was no vanity, it used to feel like you are working in 200-degree temperature because the costumes and the accessories were so heavy.”
