Rahul Dev, known for his intense screen presence and impactful performances in films like Champion, Footpath, Asoka, and several powerful antagonist roles across Hindi and South cinema, has built a reputation for bringing depth to negative characters. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Bubble, the actor opened up about the growing obsession with physical appearance in acting and whether a chiselled body is truly necessary for performers. Scroll on to know what the actor had to share.
Rahul Dev Questions Bollywood’s Obsession With Actors Having ‘Six-Pack’
Talking about the idea that actors need to maintain a six-pack or heavily sculpted physique, Rahul Dev strongly disagreed with the notion and stressed that acting is more about craft than appearance. He said, “Pehli baat toh yeh zaroori bilkul bhi nahi hai body hona actor banne ke liye. Bilkul bhi nahi hai. Mai toh kitne log mujhe milte hain aur kehte hain, ‘Yaar main transformation kar raha hoon apna.’ Main kehta hoon, ‘Bhai jaake tu scenes padh. Tu scenes ki practice kar sheeshe ke aage, Tu poetry padh agar tujhe karni hai acting. Tu apne six pack mat kar.’ Unless ki koi aisa role aaye aapke paas.”
He further explained how physical appearance often becomes the industry’s focus, especially in visual media, but does not define true acting ability. Dev added, “Kyunki it’s easy on the eye. Accha lagta hai ek aadmi, ek sundar aadmi hai, tagda hai, six pack mein hai. Toh magazines ko accha lagta hai, papers ko accha lagta hai, aap jaise channels ko accha lagta hai. So you all only make heroes out of them.”
Rahul Dev Opens Up On If Chiselled Body Is Necessary For Actors?
Rahul also pointed out how audience perception often gets shaped by such portrayals, leading to stereotypes about what an actor should look like. “Toh jab koi jaata hai toh aisa lagta hai ki yaar actors ka matlab, actor ka matlab six-pack hona chahiye. Ab Nawaz bhai ka toh koi six pack nahi hai, magar mujhe lagta hai ki unse bada koi actor nahi hai. Kyunki unko kala pe ek control hai. Woh apni kala se jo bhi hai, woh communicate karte hain audience ko.”
Expanding further, he emphasised that acting is a craft where talent and expression matter far more than physicality. He added, “Toh agar dekhe toh yaar visually hai yeh art form, toh dekh ke kya hi pata lagta hai kisi ka yaar kaun kya kar sakta hai. Hai ki nahi? Accha toh Manoj (Bajpayee) hai, bahut saare aise actors hain jo ki bahut hi accha kaam karte hain. Bilkul saadharan lagte hain aur bahut bahut accha kaam karte hain, aur bahut zyada hi accha kaam karte hain rather.”
He concluded by reinforcing that acting is an art form that develops over time and cannot be reduced to physical standards alone. “Toh mujhe aisa lagta hai personally ki yeh craft hai, kala hai. Aur hum… dekho main toh trained actor nahi hoon. Humein toh gradually yeh samajh mein aa rahi hai baatein.”
