Director Honey Trehan faced a long and challenging journey to ensure his film Satluj, formerly titled Panjab 95, was released as he envisioned. The film, which portrays the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, was released uncut on Zee5 this Friday. However, it was abruptly taken down on Sunday, with Zee5 citing “developments” in a brief statement. Despite this setback, Trehan remains hopeful about the film’s future, as reflected in his brief reaction to the shadow ban.
Satluj stars Diljit Dosanjh as the late Khalra, who played a pivotal role in investigating the cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies in Punjab during 1984–1994. The film’s portrayal of events during the turbulent 80s and 90s was highly controversial, and its release was seen as a significant moment. The sudden removal, therefore, came as a shock to many viewers and supporters. Scroll down to read what happened.
Diljit Dosanjh Starrer Satluj REMOVED From OTT After Release
On Sunday evening, Zee5 issued a statement informing viewers that Satluj would no longer be available in India until further notice. Their statement read, “In light of the current developments, ‘Satluj’ will be unavailable in India until further notice. We remain committed to exploring every appropriate avenue through due process to bring the film back to our audiences at the earliest opportunity. We are deeply grateful to every viewer who chose to subscribe, watch, and champion the film. Your love and support have meant a great deal to us and everyone involved in bringing this story to life. Following the removal, Diljit Dosanjh shared a scene symbolizing Khalra’s resilience, writing, “I challenge the darkness,” and in Punjabi, “Panjab 95 aka Satluj is meeting the same fate as the late Khalra saab.”
Later, Honey Trehan shared the Zee5 statement on Instagram Stories with a short message in Punjabi: “Tera bhana meetha lage,” meaning “God’s will seems sweet,” accompanied by a folded hands emoji—a sign of hope and acceptance. Diljit also responded philosophically, likening the shadow ban to Khalra’s mysterious disappearance and killing.

Diljit’s Prediction Of The Film’s Ban
Satluj has been a highly controversial project. In 2022, after submitting the film to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the board demanded 120 cuts. A planned world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival was canceled after the filmmakers challenged the cuts. Eventually, the film was retitled and released uncut on Zee5 as Satluj this Friday.
During an Instagram Live session on Saturday, Diljit was asked if he feared the film would be taken down from the platform. He replied, “Yes, there is. Just like there was surprise that it came on OTT in the first place. Today is Saturday. I feel it could be taken down by Monday. But no worry, you download it and watch. No issues.”
