Subhash Ghai is gearing up for a Taal sequel nearly 27 years after the original, but it will feature a completely new cast and storyline. The filmmaker revealed that instead of revisiting the past characters, the new film will be a fresh musical love story led by new faces.
Subhash Ghai CONFIRMS Taal Sequel With New Faces
Almost three decades after Taal (1999) became a blockbuster, Ghai shared his plans for its sequel. The original starred Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Akshaye Khanna, and Anil Kapoor, and told the tale of a talented village singer who rises to fame after heartbreak. However, Ghai explained to Mid-Day, “We can’t have the same actors today because they are older. So, an extension of the original story isn’t possible. It will be a new musical love story with fresh faces in the lead roles.”
Fans hoping to see Aishwarya Rai in a cameo will be disappointed. Ghai clarified, “Mukta Arts has never relied on gimmicks like star cameos. Akshaye, Aishwarya, and Anil won’t be part of Taal 2. If star power is needed, we can bring in anyone, but the characters must be justified.”
He has been developing the story over the past few years, but clarified that he won’t be directing it himself. “I’d prefer a well-known director to helm the project. We plan to announce Taal 2 by October.”
Subhai Ghai Gave Rights To Sanjay Dutt For Khalnayak Returns
Recently, Sanjay Dutt announced the sequel to his 1993 hit Khal Nayak, titled ‘Khalnayak Returns,’ for which Ghai will serve as creative producer. Ghai is also working on a second instalment of his star-studded action drama Karma (1986). “People now want to see stories with sequels. For example, Karma 2 will explore what happened to characters like Dr. Dang and Baiju [played by Anupam Kher and Jackie Shroff]. That’s next in the pipeline.”
