Vipul Shah’s upcoming film, The Kerala Story 2, has encountered legal issues following a petition filed in the Kerala High Court. A notice has been issued to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in connection with the case. The petition was filed by a resident of Kannur, seeking to halt the film’s release and revoke its censor certificate.
The Kerala Story 2 In Legal Trouble?
The trailer for The Kerala Story 2 was recently launched and received criticism from many in Kerala, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. According to ANI, the petition was filed by Sridev Namboothiri from Chittariparamba, Kannur. The High Court has issued a notice to the CBFC, and the producers, Sunshine Pictures, have been directed to respond. The next hearing is scheduled for February 24, while the film is set to release on February 27.
Details Of The Petition
As reported by Bar and Bench, the petition claims that The Kerala Story 2 depicts Kerala unfairly and risks inciting communal and regional disharmony, which could lead to law and order issues. The petitioner also challenges the film’s certification. They allege that the CBFC did not adequately assess its potential impact on public order, decency, and morality, as mandated by law.
The petition states: “The petitioner fears that the film will create law and order problems, especially since the teaser ends with the message ‘ab sahenge nahin… ladenge,’ meaning ‘we will not tolerate it anymore, but will fight.’ This phrase appears to call for action and could incite violence among viewers. The trailer, released on February 17, 2026, is seen as provocative, aiming to stir public sentiments across various sectors.”
Additionally, the petition objects to certain dialogues and themes in the promotional material. It argues that the teaser and trailer portray women from different states. However, makers label the narrative as ‘The Kerala Story,’ linking terrorism and forced conversions specifically to Kerala. The petitioner is requesting the quashing of the film’s certification and a stay on its release until the title and storyline are revised. They have also requested the addition of appropriate disclaimers.
