The Kerala Story 2 has run into fresh hurdles ahead of its planned release after the Kerala High Court directed filmmakers not to release the movie in theatres or on any platform until the pending hearing concludes. The development comes as the sequel continues to face legal and public scrutiny similar to its controversial predecessor.
HC Orders Makers To Not Release The Kerala Story 2 Until Hearing Concludes
The case was brought before the high court by petitioners who argued that The Kerala Story 2 could potentially exacerbate social tensions and offend sentiments if released without the resolution of ongoing challenges. In response, the court stayed any release plans, emphasising the need to complete the hearing before allowing distribution, whether theatrical or digital.
The legal intervention follows an earlier certification process by the Central Board of Film Certification, where The Kerala Story 2 was granted a U/A certificate only after significant edits. According to a Times of India report, the film underwent 16 cuts, with intimate sequences and scenes depicting assault trimmed by nearly half to comply with censor guidelines before certification was issued.
The combination of judicial restraint and censor-board edits shows how contentious the film remains. The original The Kerala Story had ignited widespread debate upon its release, with both supporters and critics weighing in on its portrayal of sensitive themes. Its sequel was expected to build on similar narratives, but concerns about its potential impact prompted legal challenges even before release.
The Kerala Story 2 Underwent 16 Cuts
Counsel for the petitioners argued in court that the film’s promotional material and thematic content could trigger polarising reactions among the public. Meanwhile, the makers maintained that the film is a work of fiction and that the CBFC’s certification should suffice for release under Indian law, specifically the Cinematograph Act.
Sources close to the production confirmed that the team will comply with the Kerala High Court’s interim stay and present their arguments at the substantive hearing. They emphasised that they hope the legal process will be resolved in due course so that the film can reach audiences.
With both a censor-mandated version in hand and a judicial order in place, The Kerala Story 2’s theatrical and digital release remains on hold until the court completes its review.
