‘Salim’ Sumit Gahlawat On The Kerala Story 2
Can you tell us about the beef scene—what was your first reaction when you read or heard about it, how was the experience of filming it, whether it was shot in a single take, and if you contributed any inputs to shape how the scene finally turned out?
We have to take every scene very seriously; we can’t specifically choose one scene. As a story, we have to give 100 per cent in every scene. No, didn’t contribute on a creative level. That is the director’s vision.
Critics say your film propagates certain political or religious agendas. There was a lot of debate about the portrayal of religious conversions. Do you think the film unfairly stereotypes certain communities? What’s your stance on this?
I only think about my role, and as an actor, I have to do justice to the role given to me.
Considering your extensive preparation for the role—reading the script 25 times and attending multiple prep sessions—do you think actors should take responsibility for the social messages their characters convey?
I don’t think so. If actors are going to think about that, then they will never be able to do negative roles.
You’ve worked with Vipul Amrutlal Shah on multiple projects. Do you think collaboration with certain producers influences the kind of content you choose to be part of? What roles are you looking forward to next?
I am lucky that Vipul Sir has shown faith in me. I want to work with good producers, and the list is so big, it’s just the starting point. And, I would love to do roles in all genres, be it comedy or action.
