Riteish Deshmukh Raja Shivaji Box Office

11 years after first sharing that he will be making a film on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Riteish Deshmukh’s ambitious historical drama, Raja Shivaji, released in theatres. The film – despite mixed reviews, impressed the audience especially in the Marathi belt, and the same is evident in its box office collection. As per the recent box office report, the Hindi-Marathi film – also starring Genelia D’Souza, Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, and others, has amassed over double its opening day collection on Day 2.

Raja Shivaji Box Office

As reported by trade website Sacnilk, Raja Shivaji earned Rs 10.55 crore nett in India on its first Saturday from 6,275 shows. Paired with its opening day collection of Rs 11.35 crore, the film’s current nett domestic collection has amounted to an impressive Rs 21.90 crore. The Riteish Deshmukh-led historic drama’s gross total current stands at Rs 26.06 crore.

Just like its opening day, Raja Shivaji performed better in Marathi than it did in Hindi. As per the report, the film earned Rs 3.40 crore from its Hindi version and over double – Rs 7.15 crore, in Marathi. The report also noted that the Marathi shows witnessed 57% occupancy while the Hindi version only saw 16% occupancy. However, when it comes to the number of shows, there were 4,295 Hindi show and only 1,980 Marathi ones.

About Raja Shivaji

Co-written and directed by Riteish Deshmukh, Raja Shivaji is based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. The film is co-produced by Genelia D’Souza and Jyoti Deshpande.

Talking about its ensemble cast, the historic drama stars Riteish and Genelia as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Saibai, respectively. Their sons, Rahyl and Riaan, portray younger version of Shivaji Raje. Alongside the Deshmukhs, the film also features Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar and Bhagyashree in pivotal roles. The film also stars Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, Amole Gupte and Salman Khan in key roles.

Reportedly, Raja Shivaji is the most expensive Marathi film made to date, with a budget of Rs 100 crore. Giving the film a 3-star rating, Bollywood Bubble wrote in its review, “There is no problem in the story being told, the film just suffers on several accounts because of technology such as VFX, editing and action choreography.”
