Peddi Buchi Babu Sana Janhvi Kapoor

Peddi has continued to dominate the box office since its release on June 4. However, alongside its commercial success, the Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor starrer also sparked major backlash online over the portrayal of Janhvi’s character Achiyyamma. Following criticism from viewers and women’s rights groups, director Buchi Babu Sana has now confirmed that the makers removed several controversial scenes from the film.

Buchi Babu Sana On Peddi Backlash

In an interview with Indian Express, Buchi Babu Sana addressed the criticism surrounding Janhvi Kapoor’s portrayal and admitted that certain scenes had “turned misleading.”

The controversy erupted after viewers criticised the way Achiyyamma was introduced and filmed in several portions of the movie. Social media users particularly objected to close-up shots focused on Janhvi Kapoor’s waist, navel and cleavage, along with a romantic scene in which Peddi kisses her without consent.

As criticism intensified online, the makers earlier issued a public statement apologising for the scenes and promising corrective action. Now, Buchi Babu Sana has revealed that the team has officially removed those portions from the film. “In my opinion, a lot of people misread Janhvi Kapoor’s track as unnecessary in an otherwise good story.”

‘I Wanted To Show The Rawness’: Buchi Babu Defends Peddi Character Arc

The filmmaker further explained that he intentionally designed Peddi’s character to appear raw and flawed in the beginning before eventually showing his transformation. He said, “In this film, I went a little radical, because Peddi comes from a remote place, somewhere far away from the hills. I wanted to show the rawness and later correct it in the end, saying that this guy is this way because of his upbringing and atmosphere. For such a character, he thinks he has to marry the woman he loves.”

At the same time, the director admitted that the execution of some scenes did not land the way the team intended. “In this process, a few shots turned misleading. We have taken corrective measures to remove them, and we have removed them.”

Neither Ram Charan nor Janhvi Kapoor has publicly reacted to the controversy so far.

Despite the backlash, Peddi has continued to perform strongly at the global box office. The sports drama also stars Shiva Rajkumar, Jagapathi Babu, Boman Irani and Upendra Limaye in key roles.
