The debate around women’s representation in Indian politics has once again taken centre stage. This time triggering a sharp political and public exchange between actors-turned-politicians. The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which sought to tweak provisions linked to the implementation of the Women’s Reservation framework. Failed to pass in the Lok Sabha after the government could not secure the required special majority. While the development sparked reactions across political lines, it also led to a heated back-and-forth between Pawan Kalyan and Prakash Raj on social media.
Prakash Raj SLAMS Pawan Kalyan Over Women’s Reservations Bill Row
On Friday evening, the Lower House voted on the amendment bill. A total of 298 members supported it, while 230 voted against it. However, the bill still fell short of the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments. As a result, the proposed changes did not go through. Notably, two other key bills related to delimitation and increasing Lok Sabha seats were not taken up for voting after this setback.
Reacting to the development, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan took to X and strongly criticised the Opposition. He wrote, “A historic opportunity to strengthen women’s representation in India’s legislatures has been deliberately blocked by the opposition. The opposition’s stance makes it clear that they lack the intent to support transformative reforms that strengthen Bharat’s democracy and empower women. By refusing to back the Women’s Reservation Bill, they have once again placed political calculations above national progress, delaying a long-overdue step toward inclusive governance and gender justice.”
Please stop lying to citizens just to please Modi. Women reservation bill was approved in 2023 itself. It can be passed even now . But your gang wanted to pass Delimitation bill which would weaken the representation of South Indian states including Andhra Pradesh. Requesting you… https://t.co/LyQGy2Fh8E

Pawan Kalyan’s Tweet On Women’s Reservations Bill
He further added, “Supporting this landmark reform would have demonstrated a collective commitment to empowering women and deepening democratic values. As an NDA ally, the @JanaSenaParty firmly welcomes and appreciates the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji in bringing this significant bill before Parliament. Had it been passed, it would have marked a defining moment of pride and progress for millions of women across the country. We remain confident that, in the days ahead, women will secure their rightful and strengthened place in India’s legislative institutions.”
Prakash Raj’s Response To Pawan Kalyan’s Tweet
However, his remarks drew a sharp response from actor Prakash Raj, who reshared the post and questioned his claims. He wrote, “Please stop lying to citizens just to please Modi. Women’s reservation bill was approved in 2023 itself. It can be passed even now. But your gang wanted to pass Delimitation bill which would weaken the representation of South Indian states including Andhra Pradesh. Requesting you not to sell the self respect and the State rights of Andhra People who have made you DCM (folded hands emoticons) I am ready for debate with you to explain. Are you ready?” (sic)
Meanwhile, the larger legislative context adds another layer to the debate. The Women’s Reservation Act, passed in 2023, remains in force and was recently notified in the official gazette. However, its implementation depends on a future delimitation exercise, which has become a point of contention between the government and the Opposition.
While ruling alliance members have criticised the Opposition and even staged protests, calling the move anti-women, Opposition leaders have pushed back. They have maintained that they support women’s reservation in principle but oppose linking it to delimitation.
As the political debate intensifies, the issue continues to reflect deeper disagreements over representation, timing, and the broader structure of India’s electoral system.
