Comedian Pranit More became embroiled in controversy earlier this month after an audience member named Himanshu Jangra made insensitive comments about women during his show. The 23-year-old man claimed he went on a date with a woman, paid Rs 370 for a plate of chicken biryani, and believed he deserved a “return” on his investment. He later issued an apology and deleted his social media accounts. Himanshu Jangra also appeared before the National Commission for Women (NCW) in connection with the ongoing Rs 370 biryani remark controversy.

Pranit also apologized, stating, ‘comments made by the audience member do not reflect my views’. The NCW took suo motu cognisance of the comment that was made. Many videos shared on X show Pranit and Himanshu Jangra appeared before the NCW regarding the Rs 370 biryani remark controversy.
Pranit wore a mask as he approached the NCW office. Several media representatives tried to question him and seek his comments, but the comedian remained silent and proceeded inside the premises. Separately, comedian Madhur Virli appeared over alleged derogatory remarks against women made during a stand-up performance. He, too, wore a face mask and left the premises without commenting on the matter.

About The Hearing
The commission had scheduled a hearing in the case on June 22 at 4 PM. In a press note, the women’s council expressed serious concern about the jokes being made. They trivialized the conduct and presented it as entertainment. PTI reported, citing sources, that the NCW rejected their apology. During the proceedings, chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar expressed profound anguish over such demeaning content being promoted. She also questioned why is this normalized in the name of comedy.
She emphasized that while the commission supports creative freedom, freedom of speech does not extend to normalizing violations of women’s bodily autonomy or turning heinous crimes like rape and murder into entertainment material.
What Is The Controversy?
Regarding the controversy surrounding Pranit More, a video posted by him shows him doing crowdwork during a show. Himanshu said he went on a date with a woman and paid Rs 370 for chicken biryani, expecting a ‘return’ on his investment. Pranit, who laughed at the moment and uploaded the clip on social media, later issued an apology.
“I’ve seen the criticism regarding a recent crowdwork clip. The comments made by the audience member do not reflect my views. Looking back, I should have challenged the remark instead of laughing and moving on,” part of Pranit’s statement read.
