Mahavatar Narsimha Review

Hombale Films’ highly anticipated animated film Mahavatar Narsimha, the first film in their Mahavatar Cinematic Universe, has released and is nothing short of an animation spectacle that will not only entertain the audience but also teach kids about Lord Vishnu’s most fierce avatar.

The film starts with Maharishi Kashyap doing Sandhya Pooja when one of his many wives, Diti seduces him as she desires to be a mother just like her sisters (his other wives). While Maharishi initially dismisses her attempts as that time of the day is consider inauspicious as per Vedas and Puranas, as negative energy and demon souls roam during and take shelter in the womb, he later gives in. The next morning, a furious Kashyap yells at Diti as he realises that she is not pregnant with two powerful demons named Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu.

The story tells the tale of Lord Vishnu’s two avatars – Lord Varaha and Lord Narsimha, their arrival on earn to kill the twin demon brothers, who ruled both humans on earth and the demigods of heaven with cruelty, injustice, and tyranny. Alongside showing Lord Vishnu cleansing the earth of these demonic brothers, Mahavtar Narsimha also narrates the story of 5-year-old Prahlad – Hiranyakashipu son and one of the greatest devotees of Lord Vishnu. Despite his father’s constant opposing and several attempts at killing him, Prahlad’s faith doesn’t faulter.

What Works

Director Ashwin Kumar deserves a round of applause for retelling a tale from Indian scriptures ghat many do not know about – being a non-Hindu, this film has introduced me to who Holika Dahan. The climax is just wow. The beautifully created and depicted final battle between the half-lion, half-man reincarnation of Lord Vishnu and Hiranyakashyap, followed by Narsimha’s dualistic form of anger and mercy is perfectly executed. The film’s mind-blowing animation – along with its intricate character designs and color palettes, takes center stage making the film a visual treat for all viewers.

What Doesn’t Work

While the story telling and animation help in keeping you invested in knowing more about Lord Narsimha, the first half is slow and disconnecting.

Conclusion

At a time when the young generation are inclining towards the western culture (no offense – to each their own), it’s heartwarming to see director Ashwin Kumar making effort to reintroduce them to Indian culture in an entertaining way. This larger-than-life action spectacle evokes feelings of pride in one’s culture and heritage. Mahavatar Narsimha is worth a watch in theatres.
