Vijay Varma

Vijay Varma has spent over 15 years navigating the highs and lows of the film industry, gradually building a reputation as one of its most versatile performers. From intense roles in Pink, Darlings, Mirzapur, She, and Dahaad, he has consistently chosen layered characters that push boundaries.

Vijay Varma Reflects Idea Of Success In Bollywood

Now, with Matka King, he steps into a new space. In the series, directed by Nagraj Manjule. Vijay plays Brij Bhatti, a gambling king who stands out for his honesty despite operating in a morally grey world. The role marks a fresh turn while staying rooted in complexity.

In an interview with SCREEN, Vijay Varma reflected on his early days in Mumbai. He explained that newcomers often see only the highlight reel of the industry. He said, “I didn’t know what happens. When you come to this city as an actor, you only see the most successful stories. You see the picture of Shah Rukh Khan on page 1. Everybody is a success story. I thought you do a film and you get there. That’s your story. Your name comes there.”

However, reality soon set in. He admitted that his early optimism, though naive, helped him take risks. “But then came the rude realization. Actually, that innocence was important for that time to go out and get things done. If the 2008 Vijay knew that doing a film is not enough, that the film may not even release or work or your role may not be appreciated by the audience, then I wouldn’t have even tried out of fear.”

The Darlings actor also emphasised how slow the journey can be. “It’s only after trying that you realize you haven’t made it. You just hope that you get two more scenes in the next one. So, the journey is very, very slow, almost at a snail pace. But I’m glad I wasn’t aware of the failures ahead of me. Had I known, maybe I’d be scared to even attempt anything.”

Vijay Varma On Being In A Dark Phase Before Gully Boy

At the trailer launch of Matka King, Vijay opened up about a turning point in his career and credited Gully Boy for changing his trajectory. He shared how the film came to him at a time when he was struggling personally and professionally.

The actor said, “Gully Boy was a significant moment in my life. I remember I was down in the dumps, when that film happened, it saved me, it gave me a career. So I’m very thankful to do that film, and with Ranveer of course, one of the finest co-actors I’ve worked with.”

The actor also spoke about working alongside Ranveer Singh, highlighting the collaborative energy that helped shape the film’s impact. His remarks added context to how Gully Boy became a breakthrough moment after years of struggle.

Vijay Varma’s journey reflects the reality behind Bollywood’s success stories. While the industry often celebrates instant fame, his experience shows that persistence matters more. With Matka King, he continues to evolve, proving that steady growth and honest storytelling can create lasting impact.
