Set against the picturesque backdrop of college town Dehradun, Mannu Kya Karegga? follows the life Manav Chaturvedi aka Mannu (Vyom), an all-round student who is invested in everything – sports (football), drama, IT and books. While he’s busy with his education and several extra curriculum activities, Many has no idea where he’s going or what he wants to do in the future. As he attempts to to figure out what gets him going, Jiya Rastogi (Saachi Bindra) – a no-nonsense student who transferred to Dehradun from DU, enters the college and his life. She has her future planned and aims at continuing her further education at either Stanford or Harvard. She’s ambitious, driven, and brimming with purpose — everything Mannu is not – as yet.
A road trip together – after missing the college trip bus, the duo develop a close bond which leads to sparks flying and love blooming in the young hears. To not loose the girl owing to his still-unclear future plans, Mannu creates a fake start-up – Nothing, an app which allegedly allows individuals to synchronize their calendars to do, essentially, nothing. Just like we saw in FALTU, what begins innocently soon escalates into utter madness filled with bogus offices, make-believe co-workers, inflated dreams and loads of drama, until the truth catches up and everything shatters. Does Manu success in turning the tide? Does he get the girl and make something worthwhile in life? To know the answers watch, Mannu Kya Karegga, and here’s our review of it.
What Works
The film’s heartfelt music and realistic performances add a layer of personality to the story that makes it feel like it’s your friend’s life.
Technical Ananalysis
Written beautifully by Saurabh Gupta and Radhika Malhotra, the narrative is void of any dramatic peaks and melodramatic troughs added only to grabs eyeballs. The cinematography reflects the glory of Dehradun’s landscape and the college campus so much that it will make you want to pack your bags and head the mountains or even college life – even if that means studying again.
The film’s background score and music elevates the narrative and makes the story more nuanced and real. Be it Mannu Tera Kya Hoga, Fanaa Hua, Humnawa, or Teri Yaadein, the music is sheer magic that sews together milestones and emotions with melody.
Acting
The characters across the board are beautifully brought to life. Vyom makes Mannu lovable even at his worst, imbuing him with just the right amount of charm and vulnerability. Saachi Bindra aas Jiya is a breath of fresh air — she’s poised, passionate, and quietly powerful.
Kumud Mishra and Charu Shankar as Mannu’s supportive-yet-disappointed parents add an emotional layer without turning into the preachy parents we are typically introduced to. Vinay Pathak as Don – the Dean of Nothing, is the perfect mentor with his eccentric, philosophical, and unexpectedly wise advices. All the characters in the film feel real and will resonate with some or the other individual in your close circle.
Conclusion
Mannu Kya Karegga is an easy college rom-com that gets mingled with self-discovery with a love story true at heart, set in chartbuster music that lingers. The film is sure to make you feel all warm and fuzzy once you step out of the theatres.
