Naga Chaitanya recently approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality rights amid concerns over the unauthorised use of his name, image, and content related to him online. The suit was filed over multiple issues, including the circulation of AI-generated and pornographic content, as well as defamatory material suggesting that he cheated on his ex-wife, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and ruined her career.
Naga Chaitanya Gets Interim Relief In Personality Rights
According to Chaitanya’s legal team, Justice Jyoti Singh heard the case after Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, representing the actor, highlighted that several websites are using his name alongside explicit search terms to attract traffic and spread objectionable content. The lawyer expressed concerns over AI-generated videos and manipulated content that falsely depict Chaitanya in inappropriate situations, including deepfake videos and voice cloning, which are used for commercial gain.
Advocate Gaggar emphasised that some of the content also falsely portrays him and Samantha, suggesting infidelity and damaging her reputation. “This is trolling, this is not fair criticism,” he stated, underscoring the malicious intent behind such content. The court was also shown unauthorised listings of merchandise featuring Chaitanya’s likeness. His lawyer pointed out that he is a leading figure in the Telugu film industry with a successful career. He also highlighted that the court had previously protected his father, Nagarjuna’s, personality rights.
What Is The Lawsuit?
The suit accuses the use of advanced AI tools, deepfake technology, and digital manipulation techniques to spread fabricated audiovisual content. These harm Chaitanya’s reputation, dignity, privacy, and public image. Defamatory videos on YouTube and other platforms were flagged; while some links have been taken down, others remain accessible. The court observed that while public figures are subject to scrutiny, there are limits to such exposure. “You are in public life, you are certainly more vulnerable than the rest of the people, but it has its limitations,” remarked the judge. The court also described one of the infringing links as ‘borderline’.
Chaitanya’s lawyer urged for a dynamic injunction to prevent the daily surfacing of such harmful content. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on September 30. The court issues a summons and indicates it may pass an interim order.
