Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay Thalapathy took the oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, marking the state’s first non-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and non-All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government in nearly 60 years. Vijay, aged 51, was sworn in at a packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, with family members and senior politicians present.
Vijay Thalapathy Takes Oath As Tamil Nadu CM
Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), founded by C. Joseph Vijay in February 2024, made a stunning debut in Tamil Nadu politics during the 2026 Assembly elections, transforming the state’s political landscape within just two years of its inception. In its very first Assembly election, TVK achieved a historic milestone by winning 108 out of 234 seats, emerging as the largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. This decisive victory marked a significant setback for the long-dominant DMK and AIADMK, which had held sway over Tamil Nadu politics for decades.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, attended by senior leaders and supporters. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath to Vijay, who assumed office as Chief Minister after a tense five-day political struggle to secure the majority. Notably, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was also present at the event.
Formed just two years ago, the TVK made a remarkable debut in last month’s assembly elections, winning 108 out of 234 seats. However, the party fell short of the majority mark of 118.
Vijay’s Journey From Film To Politics
Born on June 22, 1974, in Chennai (then Madras), Vijay first appeared on screen as a child artist in Vetri (1984), a film starring Vijayakanth and directed by his father, SA Chandrasekhar. He made his debut as a lead actor in 1992 with Naalaiya Theerpu at age 18. The following year, he appeared in ‘Sendhoorapandi’, playing Vijayakanth’s younger brother.
Vijay earned the title ‘Thalapathy’ when his family promoted his third film, Rasigan (1994), with the nickname Ilaya Thalapathy (Young Commander). He went on to deliver blockbuster hits like Thuppakki (2012), Kaththi (2014), Mersal (2017), Bigil (2019), and Leo (2023). In 2024, he left the film industry to enter politics and launched his party, the TVK.
