Abhishek Banerjee Talks About Casting Scene Post #MeToo

Abhishek Banerjee, known for his roles in Paatal Lok and Stree 2, is not just an actor but also a casting director. In a recent interview, he opened up about how the #MeToo movement has changed the casting process in Bollywood. He said that earlier, meetings for roles often happened in coffee shops or over dinner, but now that has reduced, making things more professional and safer for everyone.

Abhishek Banerjee Talks About Changes in Casting After #MeToo

Abhishek said that some people used to find it hard to believe that casting could be done without any hidden motive. Speaking with Mid-Day, he said, “I remember when I used to cast, it was so difficult for people to like accept that we were doing it without sex. Ki hum kaam kar rahe hain, but hum only kaam kar rahe hain. (That we are only working).”

He recalled times when, after selecting someone for a role, the person would ask, “I have had experiences where after casting somebody, people have said, ‘Oh, so now when?’ And I would go, ‘What? You’re a fantastic actor. Like, why can’t you just accept that?” That there’s no prior notion behind casting you. It used to happen a lot.”

He also said that when he started as a casting assistant, casual flirting and inappropriate behaviour were quite common in some offices. Over time, with awareness growing, such practices have reduced.

Abhishek shared that many actors would ask why their auditions didn’t go further, and he would have to explain honestly that the reason was their performance, not anything else.

His casting company follows a strict rule: no meetings with actors outside the office for work purposes. He believes this helps maintain a clear, professional boundary and protects both sides. These changes, he says, are a positive step toward a more respectful and fair film industry.
