Padmavati

It seems like there is no respite for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’ which is riddled in controversies since the beginning. Now, as the movie is nearing its release date, a member of Telangana assembly named T. Raja Singh has threatened to burn down theatres screening the movie. He even asserted that if at all his members are arrested for burning the theatres, he will bail them out.

He said this during a meeting of a Rajasthani organisation. He said that the movie is a conspiracy to depict the culture of Rajasthan in a bad light as it defames their queens. He posted his speech on Facebook. In it, he called filmmaker Bhansali “a dog” for reportedly depicting ‘Padmavati’ as a lover of Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji. He stated that almost 16000 women immolated themselves due to the attack on Chittorgarh fort. (Also Read: Padmavati: Deepika does a Ghoomar while promoting the movie)

He further said that the filmmaker had still not agreed upon their request to show the movie to them before it releases in cinema halls. He said, “If the film depict history without any distortion and highlights the valour of Rajputs, we will welcome it but if it portrays them in poor light then we will not allow its release in theatres.” He stated that just for the sake of more money, producers have been making such films as audiences will be lured to watch them due to the controversies around it. Citing an example of Aamir Khan-starrer ‘PK’, he said that it did a business of Rs 500 crore as more people viewed it after the protests.

Said Singh, “If you are true patriots and true Hindus, you should boycott such movies. You should not help them make money. If the film flops, no other filmmaker will dare to make such movies.” ‘Padmavati’ starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor is up for release on December 1, 2017. We only hope that the makers are able to release it as per schedule.
