Priyanka Chopra revealed that she was once fired from a Bollywood film despite having already signed the contract, after her male co-star told her it was the director’s mistake. He claimed that the director had hired her by mistake because the role was meant for another actress. Priyanka described feeling heartbroken and caught in a difficult situation, as she held a legal contract but couldn’t do anything to change the decision.
Priyanka Chopra Recalls Being Fired From A Bollywood Film On Salaam-E-Ishq Sets
In a recent discussion at Harvard Business School, Priyanka recounted an incident from the set of her 2007 film Salaam-E-Ishq. She thought her male co-star was visiting her to show support ahead of their upcoming project, but instead, he told her, “The director gave you this movie by mistake. It was his mistake. It was always meant for another girl, but we’ll do another film together, don’t worry.” He then left, leaving Priyanka stunned.
At the time, Priyanka was just 22 and considered this a pivotal film for her career. She said, “My heart just crushed, and I was like, ‘I signed a contract. What do you mean?’ But that’s how it was,” she shared. She added that she experienced similar situations multiple times early in her career. Despite her success in several films, she was still in the process of building her reputation.
Film Roles ‘Taken Away’ from Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka made her debut in 2003 with Andaaz, alongside Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta. During that period, many newcomers from film families—such as Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, and Zayed Khan—entered Bollywood. When asked about nepotism, Priyanka said, “I didn’t know what nepotism meant at the time. I just knew that every parent wants to give their children the best future possible—that’s normal. My parents did everything they could to give me choices, so I didn’t understand the limitations or what nepotism really was.”
She also recalled how, early in her career, some of her roles were “taken away” from her. “I was cast as a lead, then suddenly cast as a second lead because of politics, or someone else got the role. I realised no one was making movies just for me. I wasn’t related to anyone influential, and I hadn’t been to certain people’s homes since I was four. That reality hit hard when I met colleagues and friends,” she explained.
Despite these setbacks, Priyanka noted that positive reviews for her performances motivated her to keep going. “I started seeking a variety of roles,” she said, emphasising her focus on growth.
Priyanka has not been active in Indian films since her 2019 project The Sky is Pink. Her next film is Vaaranasi, directed by SS Rajamouli, scheduled for release in 2027.
