Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone have received interim relief from the Rajasthan High Court in a case that accused them of misleading consumers through a car advertisement. The case was filed in Bharatpur, where a local man claimed that their endorsement influenced his decision to buy a Hyundai car that later developed defects.
Shah Rukh & Deepika Not Responsible for Car Defects
The complaint was made by Kirti Singh, who registered an FIR saying he suffered financial losses due to problems with the vehicle. He named both actors along with six Hyundai company officials, saying their promotion misled him.
Shah Rukh and Deepika both approached the court to cancel the FIR. Shah Rukh’s lawyer, Kapil Sibal, argued that the actor had no role in the vehicle’s quality, saying, “Endorsing a product doesn’t mean you’re responsible for how it’s made.” Deepika’s lawyer, Madhav Mitra, said she was only involved in brand promotion and had no link to the product’s manufacturing.
Here’s What The Court Stated
The lawyers pointed out that the car was used for nearly three years and had over 67,000 km on it before the complaint was filed. They argued the buyer should have gone to a consumer court instead. Justice Sudesh Bansal noted that the FIR lacked proper facts and stayed all action against the actors and company officials. The next hearing is set for September 25.
Shah Rukh has been a Hyundai brand ambassador since 1998, while Deepika joined in December 2023. They appeared together in a campaign last year. This case raises larger questions about how much responsibility celebrities hold for the products they promote — a topic highlighted by the Supreme Court in 2023 regarding misleading ads.
