Soha Ali Khan Reveals She Was Replaced From Paheli After Shah Rukh Khan Signed Film

Actress Soha Ali Khan recently revealed that she was originally cast in Paheli (2005), which was meant to be her big Bollywood debut. However, after Shah Rukh Khan came on board, she was replaced by Rani Mukerji. Soha opened up about the experience, explaining how she quit her well-paying job at Citibank to take on the role, only to be dropped later.

Soha Ali Khan On How She Was Replaced By Rani In Paheli

Speaking to Mashable India, she said, “It was my first film. I had a good job at Citibank and was earning well. My rent was Rs 17,000, and I was planning to move to London. But then Amol Palekar approached me with a film offer. I liked the script and the idea of acting, and of course, the pay.”

Soha admitted she didn’t fully understand how tough acting could be. “I underestimated the skills required. When Amol ji asked me to quit my job for the film, I said yes, thinking it was confirmed.”

But things changed when Shah Rukh Khan joined the project. “Amol ji called and said Shah Rukh is now playing the lead. I thought that was great. But then he said, ‘That means you’re not doing it anymore. Someone else will be cast.’ I was shocked. I had already quit my job. I thought, ‘Now what? How will I pay rent?”

Eventually, Rani Mukerji replaced her in the film. Although Paheli didn’t become her debut, Soha began her acting journey in 2004 with the Bengali film Iti Srikanta. She later appeared in her first Bollywood film, Dil Maange More, alongside Shahid Kapoor, where she played Neha, one of the love interests. Despite the rough start, Soha went on to build a successful acting career in both Hindi and regional films.
