Singer Sonu Nigam has become the subject of controversy after a police complaint was filed against him by a pro-Kannada organisation. The complaint alleges that Nigam made insulting remarks about the Kannada language. It was during a concert held in Bengaluru on April 25-26 at East Point College of Engineering and Technology.
Sonu Nigam Faces Police Complaint By Pro-Kannada Organisation
Dharmaraj A, President of the Bengaluru District Unit of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), filed the complaint. He claimed that Nigam’s comments “deeply hurt the sentiments of the Kannadiga community” and could potentially escalate linguistic tensions. According to the complaint, the incident occurred when a student requested Nigam to perform a Kannada song.
In response, Nigam is alleged to have said, “Kannada, Kannada, Kannada… this is exactly why the incident happened in Pahalgam.” This remark, which has since circulated widely on social media, has drawn significant criticism for seemingly linking a request for a song in a regional language.
Dharmaraj asserted that Nigam’s comparison equated pride in the Kannada language with intolerance, portraying Kannadigas negatively and potentially jeopardising communal harmony in Karnataka. He has urged the police to register a case against the singer under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. It includes citing charges of promoting enmity, criminal defamation, and outraging linguistic sentiments.
What Happened At Sonu Nigam’s Concert?
Reports indicate that when a group of attendees requested a Kannada song during the concert, Sonu Nigam appeared visibly irritated and reportedly lashed out at the crowd. He is further alleged to have directed his controversial comments towards those specifically requesting Kannada songs instead of Hindi songs. Videos on social media have gone viral.
The incident has ignited outrage among various personalities within the Kannada film industry and pro-Kannada activists online. Many have publicly demanded a formal apology from Nigam. While some voices have called for a complete ban on the singer, a segment of his fanbase has come to his defence. They have highlighted his past instances of showing respect for the Kannada language. Also, suggested that he should be allowed to clarify his remarks or offer an apology.
