Few days back former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has given his nod for a biopic on him. Fans are super excited and want to know who would be playing the lead and also who will be directing the film. Now, filmmaker Srijit Mukherji has revealed that Sourav Ganguly had wanted him to direct his biopic.

Talking to ETimes, Srijit revealed, “There was a plan in place in 2018 and we had met a lot of producers. But, because Sourav was very busy with his cricket commitment no deal came through.”

He added, “I really have no idea who will direct the biopic now and who will play the lead role. During our discussions, we did not speak about who could be playing his role in the biopic.” He also added, “If left to him (Sourav), he would like me to direct it. But now only Sourav is in the best position to tell you that. Back in 2018 though, he was keen on me doing it.”

Speculations are rife that Ranbir Kapoor will star in the cricketer’s biopic. However there has been no confirmation yet. Meanwhile, Srijit Mukherji is directing Mithali Raj’s biopic, Taapsee Pannu starrer Shabaash Mithu. Srijit came on-board after Rahul Dholakia had to leave the film.

Sourav Ganguly’s biopic is produced by a big banner, and reportedly a budget of around Rs 200 to Rs.250 crore has been kept aside for the project. Dada’s entire journey to becoming the BCCI president will be shown in the biopic. There’s no clarity yet on when the movie will be released.

Talking about biopics made on the life of Indian cricketers, we have M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (Dhoni), Azhar (Mohammad Azharuddin) and Sachin: A Billion Dreams (Sachin Tendulkar). A film on Indian win at the 1983 World Cup victory is lined up with Ranveer Singh playing the captain of the team, Kapil Dev, directed by Kabir Khan.
