HC Orders Interim Stay On The Kerala Story 2 Release

The makers of The Kerala Story 2 faced a significant setback on Thursday as the Kerala High Court ordered a two-week interim stay on the film’s release, which was scheduled for tomorrow in theatres. The controversy-ridden film, directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah of Sunshine Pictures, has been at the centre of debate since its promotional campaign launched. The producers maintain that the film is based on “true incidents.”

HC Orders Interim Stay On The Kerala Story 2 Release

The court’s decision came while hearing a petition filed by Sreedev Namboodiri, who requested the cancellation of the film’s UA censor certificate. His petition accused The Kerala Story 2 of maligning and stereotyping the state and its people. During the hearing, the court also criticised the Censor Board for approving the film without “applying its mind,” emphasising that the board must consider the petitioner’s concerns.

As reported by PTI, the court stated that the film should not be released until all arguments are heard, and consequently ordered an interim stay, effectively halting its release across theatres for the next two weeks. This ruling is a major blow to the producers, who had invested heavily in marketing and distribution. Several advance bookings are now expected to be cancelled or refunded, adding to the financial strain.

While the court has not issued a final ruling on the case’s merits, the interim order indicates it found sufficient grounds to pause the release pending further review. A detailed hearing is expected to take place during the stay period.

What Is The Kerala Story 2 Controversy?

For context, the film has faced protests and legal challenges since its teaser was released, with a PIL filed against it, alleging that its release could threaten communal harmony. While the case remains in court, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah recently addressed the controversy.
